Our Pheno Hunting Process

Each year, Humboldt Seed Company embarks on a massive pheno hunt to evaluate thousands of cannabis plants across Northern California. This multiweek event brings together expert farmers, cannabis enthusiasts, and industry leaders to identify standout strains with exceptional traits like unique terpene profiles, robust structure, and stunning colors. Guided by a commitment to advancing cannabis quality and diversity, this collaborative effort is a cornerstone of Humboldt Seed Company’s mission to cultivate superior genetics that thrive in a variety of environments.

The pheno hunt focuses on discovering plants with stable genetics, pest and disease resistance, and the ability to perform consistently across diverse climates. By prioritizing quality in every aspect, we ensure our seeds meet the highest standards for commercial and home growers alike.

2024 Pheno Hunt

Nestled within the rugged landscapes of Northern California, the Emerald Triangle—comprising Humboldt, Mendocino, and Trinity counties—has long stood as the pinnacle of cannabis cultivation, boasting a legacy that spans half a century. However, as pioneers in the industry, we at Humboldt Seed Company find ourselves at the forefront of a transformative shift. This year, we embarked on a unique journey from the iconic Emerald Triangle to the landscapes northwest of Sacramento, a region earning acclaim as the “Golden Triangle” or the “Emerald Dot.” Join us as we explore the dynamic intersection of tradition and innovation in the world of cannabis cultivation.

Our Seven Day Hunt

During our seven-day pheno hunt, we ventured from the Emerald Triangle to promising territories in Nevada County, Yuba County, Calaveras County, and beyond in search of the finest cannabis genetics. This scientific odyssey took us to farms cultivating our prized genetics, as well as new genetics, where we sifted through dozens, if not hundreds, of plants of the same cultivar, seeking the unicorns.
