Buds without borders: Mary Jane Berlin illuminates the universal appeal of cannabis

Inside a relaxation room at Mary Jane Berlin, roughly a dozen attendees followed a German-led breathwork exercise, extending their arms outward before drawing their hands back toward their hearts. Beyond the room, the energy and noise of the world’s largest cannabis festival filled the venue.

The gathering coincided with Humboldt Seed Company’s return to Berlin, where the California breeder introduced two new seed varieties developed in collaboration with the family of reggae icon Bob Marley. Following the festival, HSC brought Jamaican botanist and project collaborator Dr. Machel Emanuel, along with renowned cultivation expert Ed Rosenthal, to Humboldt University for a meeting with researchers. The visit connected California’s famed cannabis-growing region, German scientific history, and traditional Jamaican genetics in a uniquely international moment.
