How to Trellis Cannabis Plants: Methods for Indoor and Outdoor Growing
Modern cannabis genetics have been bred for big buds full of swollen bracts to provide a huge yield. As plants stretch and flowers gain weight, branches that once easily supported themselves can begin bending, leaning, and even breaking under the additional weight. Trellising cannabis plants provides structural support while also giving growers a way to manipulate canopy shape, improve light distribution, increase airflow, and make better use of available growing space.
However, there isn’t one universal way to trellis cannabis.
A small plant grown in a Sea of Green (SOG) system requires very different support than a plant trained beneath a Screen of Green (SCROG). Likewise, a large outdoor cannabis plant may require stakes, cages, netting, twine, and multiple layers of support to prevent branches from breaking as flowers develop.

What Is Cannabis Trellising?
Trellising is the practice of using a physical support structure to guide or support plant growth. In cannabis cultivation, trellises may be used to shape the canopy during vegetative growth, support flowering branches, or accomplish both at the same time.
A cannabis trellis can be as simple as a single stake supporting one branch or as elaborate as multiple layers of netting surrounding a large outdoor plant. Most cannabis trellising methods fall into two general categories:
- Horizontal trellising uses netting or a screen positioned horizontally above the growing area. Branches grow through or are trained across openings in the trellis. This approach is common in Sea of Green and Screen of Green cultivation.
- Individual or vertical support uses stakes, cages, ties, twine, or other materials to support individual plants and branches. This is especially common outdoors, where plants may become significantly larger.
The best trellising method depends on plant size, plant count, growing environment, cultivar structure, training style, and the amount of weight the branches will eventually need to support.
Why Trellis Cannabis Plants?
Cannabis plants don’t necessarily require trellising to grow, but providing support can make a significant difference in how effectively growers manage the canopy and support big buds. If the flowers get too large for the branches to support breakage can occur which may result in mold or loss of yield.
Create a More Even Cannabis Canopy
Cannabis naturally exhibits apical dominance, meaning the plant prioritizes upward growth of its main shoot over many of the lower branches. Growers can use training and trellising to change this structure for their benefit. Spreading branches horizontally creates a broader, more uniform canopy instead of allowing a few dominant branches to tower over the rest of the plant. This is particularly useful indoors, where growers are trying to maximize a limited lighting footprint.
Plant hormones, called auxins, accumulate in the tops of cannabis plants, and by bending or training the branches down, the hormone moves to the next highest point in the plant and can create multiple tops or main colas. This type of trellising is used to low-stress train plants into increasing their yield by manipulating their hormones. It can also increase light penetration further improving yield.
Improve Light Distribution
An uneven canopy creates uneven light exposure. The tallest branches may receive intense light while lower flowering sites remain shaded beneath the canopy. Trellising allows growers to position branches throughout the available space so more flowering sites have access to direct light. Rather than simply growing taller, the plant can be encouraged to occupy more horizontal space. Training plants can improve light distribution as well as improve air flow.
Improve Airflow Through the Canopy
Dense cannabis canopies can restrict air movement, particularly when branches and leaves overlap. Strategically positioning branches throughout a trellis creates more space within the canopy and allows air to move around leaves and flowers more effectively. This becomes more important as flowers develop and the canopy becomes denser. Better airflow can reduce the risk of pathogens such as bud rot, septoria, and powdery mildew. Support Heavy Cannabis Branches
The need for structural support often becomes most apparent during flowering. As flowers develop, branches are required to support considerably more weight than they did during vegetative growth. Wet flowers become heavier, while wind places additional mechanical stress on already loaded branches. Is Trellising the Same as Cannabis Plant Training?

The goal is generally to manipulate plant structure and redistribute growth across multiple branches.

A Sea of Green grower, on the other hand, may allow dozens of relatively small plants to grow naturally through a trellis. In this situation, the net primarily supports the flowering branches rather than determining the plants’ structure.

When Should You Trellis Cannabis Plants?
The best time to install a cannabis trellis depends on what you want the trellis to accomplish. Are you trellising for training purposes or simply to support growth?
Trellising During Vegetative Growth
When the trellis is being used for plant training, it should generally be installed during vegetative growth. SCROG growers need enough time to guide branches across the screen and fill the available growing area before flowering.
Outdoor growers may also establish stakes, cages, or structural posts early in the season so plants can grow into their support system. Installing stakes early also reduces the need to drive them through an established root zone later.
Trellising During Flowering
Support trellises are often positioned before flowering or during the early flowering stretch. As branches continue growing vertically, they pass through the trellis openings. Once flowers gain weight, the net prevents those branches from falling sideways. Some growers add a second layer of trellis higher in the canopy when plants require additional support.
Whenever possible, anticipate the plant’s needs rather than waiting until branches begin collapsing. Installing netting around mature flowers is considerably more difficult and can damage branches and trichomes.
Cannabis Trellising Methods
The best way to trellis cannabis plants depends largely on how they are being grown. A high-density indoor canopy, a SCROG, and an eight-foot outdoor plant all require different approaches.
1. Sea of Green (SOG) Trellising
Sea of Green is a cultivation method that uses a larger number of relatively small cannabis plants to quickly establish a productive canopy. Because the plants remain small and are grown close together, individual staking can become cumbersome. Instead, growers can stretch horizontal trellis netting across the entire growing area. Branches grow vertically through individual openings in the net.
Sea of Green (SOG)
Unlike SCROG, growers generally aren’t spending significant amounts of time weaving branches horizontally across the trellis. The net primarily keeps individual flowering shoots upright and separated from neighboring plants. Depending on plant height and flower weight, a second layer of netting can be installed higher in the canopy for additional support. SOG trellising works particularly well for uniform plants or clones because similar growth patterns make it easier to maintain an even canopy.
2. Screen of Green (SCROG) Trellising
Screen of Green uses the trellis much more actively. Instead of simply allowing plants to grow vertically through the net, growers use the screen to spread branches horizontally across the growing area. A SCROG screen is typically installed during vegetative growth. As branches reach the screen, they are carefully directed toward neighboring openings rather than immediately being allowed to grow vertically. Growers continue this process as the plants develop, gradually filling the available canopy. Once the desired area has been filled and flowering begins, shoots are allowed to grow upward from the established horizontal structure.
Screen of Green (SCROG)
This approach allows a relatively small number of plants to occupy a large canopy footprint and is particularly useful indoors where cultivation space and lighting are limited. SCROG works best when growers begin training early. Trying to aggressively bend mature, woody branches into a screen increases the risk of splitting or breaking them.
3. Trellising Large Outdoor Cannabis Plants
Outdoor cannabis plants can reach a scale that makes conventional indoor trellising impractical. A plant that has spent months vegetating outdoors may eventually carry dozens of large flowering branches extending several feet away from the central stem. These plants often benefit from a three-dimensional support system rather than a single horizontal net.
Growers can install sturdy stakes or posts around the plant and stretch horizontal trellis netting across the canopy. As the plant grows vertically, additional layers can be installed higher up. Another option is wrapping trellis netting vertically around the perimeter of the plant or its support posts. Outward-growing branches pass through the openings and receive support as flowers gain weight. For exceptionally large plants, horizontal and vertical netting can be combined to create a cage-like structure around the entire plant.
Outdoor structures need to support more than the weight of the plant. They also need to withstand wind, rain, irrigation, and other environmental stresses, making strong anchor points particularly important.
4. Staking Cannabis Plants Individually
Not every garden needs a full trellis system. Stakes are one of the simplest ways to support cannabis plants and work especially well for outdoor plants, container gardens, and widely spaced plants. Bamboo, fiberglass, wood, and other garden stakes can be positioned alongside the main stem or individual branches. Soft ties then secure the plant to the stake.

Stakes can also be used selectively. If most of a plant supports itself but one branch begins leaning under the weight of its flowers, adding a single stake may be easier than installing an entirely new trellis. Whenever possible, install larger stakes early. Driving a stake into a mature container or established root zone can damage roots.
5. Using Plant Yo-yos for Cannabis
Plant yo-yos provide support from above rather than below. A yo-yo attaches to an overhead structure such as a grow tent frame, greenhouse support, or dedicated garden framework. A retractable line extends downward and attaches to the branch. Yo-yos are particularly useful when an individual branch unexpectedly begins leaning during flowering.
Instead of restructuring the entire canopy, growers can simply provide additional support exactly where it is needed. They’re also adjustable, making it easy to change the amount of support as plants develop. The downside is accessibility. A few yo-yos are convenient; dozens of lines hanging throughout a grow room can quickly become frustrating when pruning, inspecting plants, or harvesting. Use them strategically rather than automatically attaching one to every branch.
6. Using Twine, Twist Ties, and Soft Plant Ties
Sometimes the simplest tools are the most useful. Twine, twist ties, rubber-coated wire, and reusable soft plant ties can all help secure cannabis branches to stakes, cages, and trellis structures. They can also hold branches in a desired position during training. The important consideration is stem expansion. Cannabis stems can increase substantially in diameter during vegetative growth.
A tie that fits comfortably today may begin cutting into plant tissue several weeks later. Avoid tightly wrapping rigid materials directly around stems. Leave room for growth and periodically inspect ties throughout the season. Soft, adjustable ties are generally preferable when the material will remain attached for an extended period.
7. Cannabis Cages and Tomato Cages
Cages offer a useful compromise between individual stakes and a full garden-wide trellis. Small and medium cannabis plants can be grown inside tomato cages, allowing branches to rest against or grow through the cage openings. Larger outdoor cages can also be constructed from heavier garden fencing or similar materials.
As the plant grows, branches can be positioned through openings or loosely attached to the cage with soft ties. Cages maintain individual access to each plant while providing support around the entire canopy, making them particularly useful for container-grown plants and outdoor gardens where plants are spaced farther apart.
Can You Combine Cannabis Trellising Methods?
Cannabis doesn’t always grow according to plan, and there is no reason growers need to commit to a single support method. A SCROG canopy may still develop a few unusually heavy flowers that benefit from yo-yos. An outdoor plant inside a cage may need stakes for its largest branches. A SOG canopy may require a second layer of netting once flowers begin gaining weight. Large outdoor plants frequently benefit from several methods at once, including structural posts, horizontal netting, vertical netting, stakes, and individual ties.
Think of trellising as a support system rather than a rigid cultivation technique. Use whatever combination provides the plant with adequate structure while maintaining access to the canopy.
How to Choose the Best Cannabis Trellis
Different cultivation styles naturally lend themselves to different support systems.

When choosing a system, consider more than whether it can physically hold the branches. You still need access to your plants. A trellis should allow enough room to scout for pests, prune, water, apply IPM treatments, inspect flowers, and eventually harvest the crop.
Common Cannabis Trellising Mistakes
Installing the Trellis Too Late
Waiting until branches are already falling over makes installation much more difficult. Plan for the size and weight of the mature plant rather than the plant currently sitting in front of you.
Using Trellis Openings That Are Too Small
Very small openings can make training difficult and create unnecessary work during harvest. Being able to reach your hand through the trellising is important for working on your plant throughout the growing season and during harvest.
Overcrowding the Canopy
Filling every available trellis opening doesn’t necessarily create a better canopy. Leaves and branches still need space for light penetration and airflow.
Pulling Branches Too Aggressively
Young cannabis stems are flexible, but that doesn’t mean they’re unbreakable. Make gradual adjustments when training branches, particularly as stems mature and become increasingly woody.
Tying Branches Too Tightly
Twist ties, wire, and twine can girdle expanding stems. Check attachment points throughout the growing season and loosen or reposition ties when necessary.
Failing to Account for Flowering Stretch
Cannabis plants can gain considerable height after the transition to flowering. When placing a trellis, consider the expected stretch of the cultivar rather than basing placement entirely on its current height.
Underestimating Flower Weight
Branches that appear perfectly capable of supporting themselves during early flowering may look very different several weeks later. Plan support around the anticipated mature flowers.
Building Weak Outdoor Trellises
An outdoor trellis is only as strong as its anchor points. A structure supporting a mature cannabis plant may experience significant forces during wind or heavy rain. Use stakes and posts capable of supporting the mature plant under real outdoor conditions.
Making the Plants Inaccessible
This is one of the easiest mistakes to make with elaborate trellising systems. Before installing another layer of netting, ask yourself whether you’ll still be able to reach the center of the plant. Trellising should make canopy management easier, not turn your garden into an obstacle course.
How to Trellis Cannabis Plants Successfully
There is no single correct way to trellis cannabis. A dense Sea of Green may only need a simple horizontal net to keep flowering branches upright, while a Screen of Green uses the trellis to actively shape the entire canopy. Small outdoor plants may need nothing more than a cage or a few stakes, while enormous outdoor plants can require multiple layers of netting and individual branch supports. The key is anticipating what the mature plant will need.
Consider how large the plant will become, how much it will stretch, how heavy its flowers are likely to be, and how environmental conditions may affect the canopy. Install structural supports early whenever possible, but remain flexible enough to add stakes, ties, or yo-yos as individual plants develop.
